Relax, cook and enjoy in Casa Battello! We supply all the cooking equipment you need, and some great cook books.
If you’re looking for self catering accommodation with a typically Venetian feel, in a quiet location with easy access to the historic sights and bustling waterways of Venice, Casa Battello is ideal. Situated in a narrow “sotoportego”, a typical Venetian side-street, the house is very close to the local waterbus stops, the Grand Canal, and the Jewish Ghetto, a place of great historical significance for Venice. This is self-catering accommodation at its most practical – as well as a fully fitted kitchen with double sink, fridge-freezer, gas cooker with electric oven, grill and hob, and microwave, the house is just minutes away from the excellent markets on Rio Terà San Leonardo. Read visitor reviews on the right to see how much they appreciate the care we put into running Casa Battello!
Built around 1820, the house is on two floors and has thick walls and shuttered windows. The sotoportego is exceptionally calm at night – the nearby Battello canal is a tranquil backwater meandering through Cannaregio, and you are likely to hear only the odd boat passing on the main canal.

Self-catering accommodation in Casa Battello: photo tour of the house in detail

A plan of the first floor
Up a short flight of stairs on the first floor you will find the upstairs sitting room, attractively decorated with comfortable seating for five, and with a view over the red-tiled rooftops towards the houses lining the nearest canal; it is light and airy. It can be used as a bedroom if you prefer: it has an easy-to-open, full-sized double sofa bed, and a linen chest. On the same floor is your master bedroom, with a super-king sized bed, again attractively decorated in rich colours.
The house can sleep five people in three rooms. Each of the three main rooms in this house sleeps up to two, and is equipped with a wardrobe. The rest of the house is suitably equipped to make five people comfortable: there are two more sofas, plenty of storage space, five chairs and a writing/dressing table. Either of the two rooms on the first floor can be cooled in the hottest weeks of the year by a portable air-conditioning unit (it wheels between the two upper rooms). The entire house measures around 70 square metres.

A plan of the ground floor
On the ground floor you will find that the house has a good-sized and well-equipped fitted kitchen, as you would expect from high-quality self-catering accommodation. There’s a table around which five people can eat in comfort, and a double sink, microwave, fridge-freezer, gas cooker with electric oven, grill and hob, so that you can make the most of the fish and vegetable markets just around the corner, and the cornucopian markets near the Rialto bridge. The bathroom has a half-sized bath with a good shower, basin, w.c. and bidet. It also has a washing machine. The main downstairs room is a sitting room, but because the main sofa quickly and easily unfolds into a full-sized double bed, you can also choose to use the room as a bedroom throughout your stay, or just at night (there is a chest to store duvet, pillows and sheets during the day, and a flexible screen that divides the sleeping area from the thoroughfare to the bathroom). The room is separated from the front entrance by a small vestibule, closed off by a sliding door.

Each of our properties has a carefully chosen selection of guidebooks, recipe books and art and architecture books to help you better appreciate and understand the city.

As well as great reviews from our users, we are regularly reviewed in leading publications such as the 2010 Rough Guide to Venice and the Veneto: "meticulously maintained ... remarkably good value ... and the owners could not be more helpful." The 2006 "Frommer's Italy" guide described us as "good value" and "wonderfully renovated". We were noted in the "Insider's Guide to Venice" (Daily Telegraph, February 2011); "five best private rentals in Venice" (Condé Nast Traveller, September 2005); and "Five best: Venetian rentals" (Independent, February 2006).
There are also some other little touches to make life comfortable and easy in Venice. We provide a tried and tested mini-library of books to help you make the most of the city: guide books, art books, history books and dictionaries. We also provide free wifi internet, a washing machine, comfortable bedlinen and towels, clothes lines, an iron and ironing board, a hair dryer – and a range of wellies, just in case of high tides. The house is gas centrally heated (not much in demand from April to September); the heater gives hot water as you need it.
We also offer free luggage storage in a locked downstairs storage room (magazzino) nearby in the Cannaregio area should you need somewhere to put your suitcases before or after check-in/departure.
