Venice is in a world of its own when it comes to food. It floats in a lagoon brimming with rare or unique fish and shellfish. The agricultural hinterland of the Veneto and Friuli produces fabulous fresh vegetables, meats and distinctive wines right on the city’s doorstep. And the cultural blending, via trade, with Syria and the far East over hundreds of years has led to many distinctive recipes, including interesting use of sweet and sour flavours.

Wonderful fresh vegetables are grown on the lagoon island of Sant’Erasmo and brought in by barge. The Venetians love produce that is “nostrano” – locally grown or caught
Contemporary Venice has a bit of a reputation as a trap for the unwary, however – with many restaurants that take advantage of tourists. In our experience there is some justice behind this reputation, but equally we know from our personal experience that you can eat very well and for good prices in Venice – whether you visit restaurants, or cook in our rental properties.
We equip each party with “tipsheets” to help them with both sides of the equation, some great recipe books, and we have invested heavily in the best kitchen equipment we can find, to make cooking a pleasure. Cannaregio is a zone of the city with a wide variety of options to suit every taste.
